Legislative Success - Year of Manufacture License Plates

On August 4, 2009, six ACCI representatives met with Senator Kruse, BMV Commissioner Andy Miller, and other BMV staff members regarding issues that ACCI members were encountering with the Year of Manufacture License Plate Law.  The following is the BMV response issued by Michael Phillips, Supervisor of Plating and Registrations, to the concerns raised by the ACCI representatives:

" I wanted to follow-up with you regarding some of the changes the BMV has implemented to our policy and procedures regarding the Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plate program subsequent to our meeting with you on August 3rd.  Based on the feedback that you provided we have implemented the following:

  1. Restored Plates – Our policy and procedures now clearly differentiate between the definitions of a “restored” plate versus an “altered” plate.  A YOM license plate that is restored back to its original specifications is acceptable for registration. As before, an altered plate will not be allowed to be registered.
  1. Customer Experience – To improve the customer experience and add consistency to the process across the over 140 BMV branches across the state, we have designated certain BMV personnel in each branch the responsibility of inspecting each YOM plate submitted for registration.

Again, we appreciate the feedback that you provided and feel confident that these implemented changes will benefit both the auto enthusiasts participating in the Year of Manufacture license plate program and the BMV."
